What is Stendra?

Stendra, also known as avanafil, is a Phosphodiesterase-5 enzyme (PDE5) inhibitor that treats erectile dysfunction (ED). ED can have physical or psychological causes but is treatable with medication and lifestyle changes.

How good Is Stendra? Stendra is FDA approved to treat erectile dysfunction and is one of the most commonly prescribed ED medications alongside Viagra.

Is Stendra More Effective Than Viagra?

Stendra and Viagra both have the same mechanism of action meaning they work on the body in the same way.

It may come down to preference but essentially the only difference between the two is that Viagra has a generic brand available called sildenafil, while the chemical in Stendra, called avanafil, is not yet available in generic form. Generally, generic forms of medications are cheaper than the branded versions.

While Viagra and Stendra are very similar, one clinical study found Stendra was more favorable in terms of side effects, drug interactions, and had less of an effect on lowering blood pressure.

What is the Strongest and Most Powerful ED Pill?

There is not one most effective ED pill. They all act similarly and which is best for you will come down to your lifestyle, general health, other medications you take, and personal preference.

A doctor can recommend which ED medication they think is best for you. Many men try several different pills before deciding which they like best.

Because all ED medications have a similar effect, the American College of Physicians recommends that the choice be based on your preferences including:

  • Cost
  • Ease of use
  • Drug effect duration
  • Side effects

What About Other ED Medications?

Common ED medications prescribed include:

How Does Stendra Work?

Stendra does not directly cause penile erections but affects the response to sexual stimulation. The release of a chemical called nitric oxide activates smooth muscle relaxation causing more blood flow to the penis. Stendra has no effect in the absence of sexual stimulation.

Potential underlying causes of erectile dysfunction should be evaluated prior to treatment.

How Long is Stendra Effective For?

Stendra should be taken 15-30 minutes before sex, depending on the dose and can last up to 6 hours. Do not take Stendra more than once a day.

Stendra Dosage and Treatment

Stendra can be taken with or without food and should be taken about 15 to 30 minutes before sexual activity. Stendra peaks 30 to 45 minutes if taken when fasting or 1.12-1.25 hours if eaten with a high-fat meal.

Stendra is offered in tablet form. Here are some common Stendra dosages and treatment regimens.

Tablet form:

  • 50 mg
  • 100 mg
  • 200 mg

Is there a generic for Stendra?

No, there is not a generic equivalent available in the US. According to Drug Patent Watch, Stendra will be eligible for generic on April 27, 2025.

Side Effects of Stendra

What are the Side Effects of Stendra?

About 2-10% of side effects include:

  • Flushing
  • Heart rhythm abnormalities
  • Dizziness
  • Back pain
  • Nasal congestion
  • Upper respiratory tract infection

Less common side effects include:

  • Chest pain
  • Abdominal distress

Alcohol may enhance the hypotensive (low blood pressure) effect of Stendra. According to the pharmaceutical company that produces Stendra, they suggest a 3-drink maximum while taking the medication.

For example, no more than 3 glasses of wine or 3 shots of whiskey when taking Stendra. Otherwise, you increase your chances of getting a headache, dizziness, increasing your heart rate, or lowering your blood pressure.

Grapefruit juice may increase drug amounts in the blood and should be limited. Stendra is not indicated for use in females and therefore should not be used while pregnant.

If you become dizzy or nauseated during sexual activity, have pain, numbness or tingling in your chest, arms, neck, or jaw, stop and call your doctor immediately.

  • Book on our free mobile app or website.

Our doctors operate in all 50 states and same day appointments are available every 15 minutes.

Considerations and Precautions of Stendra

Is Stendra Safe? Yes, Stendra is FDA approved to treat ED, but like all medications it comes with precautions.

Hypersensitivity to Stendra or co-administration with any form of nitrates is contraindicated.

Nitrate drugs include:

  • Nitroglycerine
  • Isosorbide dinitrate
  • Isosorbide mononitrate

Color discrimination, hearing loss, low blood pressure, priapism, and vision loss are serious adverse effects of Stendra.

  • Color discrimination: the eyes cannot differentiate some colors from each other even if they are in fact different.
  • Sudden or decreased hearing loss has been reported rarely and may be accompanied by tinnitus (ringing of the ears) and dizziness.
  • Priapism is a painful erection lasting more than 4 hours. Seek medical attention if an erection persists more than 4 hours after taking Stendra.
  • A decrease in blood pressure may occur and should be used with caution with patients with heart issues.
  • Vision loss may occur rarely, and the risk is increased if you have diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, are a smoker, and >50 years of age.

Stop using Stendra and get emergency help if you have sudden vision loss.

Can I Get Stendra Over the Counter?

No, Stendra is only available by prescription in the United States. Do I need a prescription for Stendra? Yes, you must get a prescription from a board-certified doctor before you can purchase a prescription online. Luckily, you can get a prescription online.

Beware of fraudulent ED pills being sold online. Medications and supplements bought online without prescriptions are not always what they seem and may contain wrong ingredients or dosages.

The FDA conducted an investigation and found a variety of problems with many sites claiming to sell Viagra and other ED medications.
